Haven't looked at the Kroger ad yet.

I get it honest, I guess....

Today I was reminded about where I get this love for coupons. I went up to the farm to meet my mom and spend the day with her. We had decided to visit one of the local gambling boats that she frequents. She has a 3 star card which gets her free rooms from time to time AND they send her coupons for free gambling money. Do you see the irony in that? The FREE stuff has hooked her. In her rush to get out the door and meet me, she up and left the $10 coupon that was good only for today at home. That about killed her. It was $10. Not $100. Just $10. But the thought of not having it just about sent her into a frenzie.

When I was younger, my sister ran a newspaper route. On Sunday's all she had to do to get her money back from the newspaper was remove and return the front page. The rest was theirs to dispose of. Well, they would dispose of them straight to my mother's living room floor. Mom would get around 30-50 papers each Sunday. She would remove the coupon circulars and pile the coupons up all around the living room. I would often times help her clip and sort her piles of "money." I know, I know!! For those of you how are as frugal as me, I can see the drool coming off your lips!

She had a show box (which soon became two shoeboxes) that she would keep in her trunk. She was always armed and ready to respond to any deal anywhere! Sometimes she would literaly clear the shelf at the store and have to ask the stock boy to go find more. I remember going with her because her shopping trips often took 2 grocery carts. She would fill the car with food and groceries and her bill would always be less than $20.00! Sometimes it would come to a $0 balance. We had a formal dining room adjacent to our eat-in kitchen. It was always stocked with all kinds of crackers, cookies, soup cans, snacks, cake mixes, cleaning products or whatever she could find for free or cheap.

So, as my mom lamented on the way to the boat, I just smiled. My mother's love for the boat is a running joke in our family. We tease her and tell her, "Mom, you spent all those years clipping coupons and getting free groceries and now you're spending it at the boat. I guess it's a good thing you did that so now you have your gambling money to blow every now and then."

Well momma, thanks for instilling in me a love for getting something for nothing, an appreciation for the value of a hard-earned dollar, and the ability to know how to work the system! I truly do get it honest, I guess.

Answering a common question people have to this coupon thing:

I had my first comment last night! I'm thrilled. I don't know who it was or how they found the website, but I'm glad they did. They posed a question that is actually very common so I thought I would answer it for all to hear!

Question: "So do you just buy what's on sale and then plan a menu for the week based on what was on sale or do you make your list of what you need and then go find where that stuff is sold at the best deal? Does my question make sense?"

Answer: Yes, your questions makes sense! And my answer will be a little bit of both...

This is how I do it. I look at the ads each week and make a list of the "deals". Then I make my rounds shopping from the list to pick up the great deals at 1-5 different stores. I've done this for long enough that I have a very well stocked pantry. As far as dinner menu's go, I like to be creative. I just take a look in the pantry and piece together a meal. I know what basics to have in the pantry (ie, chicken stock, beans, rice, spices, oils, lean meats, canned/frozen veggies, cream soups, cheeses, whole grain pastas, potato spuds, etc...). Give me a well stocked pantry and I can create a delicious and healthy meal (most of the time). I learned to do that by following recipes for several years and just paying attention as I put things together from the recipe book. So to answer your question, I plan my menu around what's in the pantry. I keep the pantry well stock inexpensively by watching the deals each week and frequenting the coupon websites & using the Sunday paper inserts.

I try to keep a good stock of items we need on a regular basis (ie garbage bags, cleaning products, paper towels, toilet paper, etc). I keep the mindset that it's better to buy it when it's cheap and save it than to go buy it at full price when you need it. So I guess you would say I pretty much buy on a "what's on sale" basis instead of a "we need it now" basis. Sometimes however, this process doesn't work and I have to go to the store to get things I need and must have now. In this case, I always go online and try to find the store where I can get the best deal.

But for the most part, my shopping is based upon purchasing what I can get cheap or almost free with the weekly sales and coupons.

Funny Meijer Story and Reason for this Blog

So Alex and I went to Meijer this morning armed with my coupons and grocery list from this week's online ad. We went about gathering everything that was on the list I had made. This is quite a job in multi-tasking for a coupon conquering mother with a 22 month old boy in the cart who likes to climb and grab anything within his reach. We got up to the register with our stack of coupons and gave them to the cashier. She smiled sweetly asking if I found everything okay and started scanning my items. I could see her eyeing my well-organized coupon box sitting in the cart out of arms reach from Alex. She politely asks, "Where do you find all those coupons?" I laughed a little in light of my addiction to coupons and replied, "Well, from the Sunday paper, various magazines, but mostly online." She wasn't quite sure what to think about that. She continued to scan the items on the belt, then began the coupons. After my bill went from over $55 to $23, she quickly responded, "Wow, I've always wanted to start doing something like that, but I just don't even know where to start." I walked off pondering this conversation.

So is this coupon craze something that is unique to me and a select few frugal moms out there? Is this a life skill that few people really know how to do? Do I have something that other people would like to learn? This is the inspiration for beginning this blog. If there are people out there who want to learn this process, I will do my best to show you how I consistently save over 50% a week on groceries. So, bookmark this site and enjoy the journey with me.
